We’ve all seen rock climbing in the movies and it sure looks dangerous. Remember in Mission Impossible when Tom Cruise is hanging off a mountain facing out to see the sunset, or in Vertical Limit when that decision needs to be made whether or not to cut the rope to sacrifice his life to save his climbing partner.
Indoor rock climbing, on the other hand, isn’t really anything like that, but it’s fun anyway! If you’ve never done any climbing, doing it the indoor way is a great way to begin. As the name suggests, you do it indoors and the rope is tied to the floor. You’re also not really climbing up rocks but these little odd shaped pieces that are screwed to the wall. However, it isn’t as easy as it sounds.
You can find these centres all over the World. If you’re in Sydney, there’s a place in Wetherill Park called Pitch. It’s a large warehouse with all different types of climbing walls. You get a short lesson and then you can just start climbing.
There are different walls for all abilities and the beginner walls are pretty easy, plus they’re a great way to get your bearings without looking stupid. It does get more difficult once you start climbing up the more advanced walls that have less odd shaped pieces to hold on to and the ones that are there get smaller and smaller. There was even a ladder made of rope and a long pole to climb. Sounds kinda kinky but it really wasn’t.
This is definitely a great experience, no matter where you are in the World, and Pitch in Sydney gave us everything that we needed.
