Now that you’ve arrived in a new city what should be your next move? As you’re new in town and know noone, most likely you don’t have any ideas. Don’t worry, many travellers share this common problem.
So how can you find out what you should do in the magnicificent place you’ve arrived at? If you’re staying at a hotel, you could wander down to the lobby and find the concierge. Some of them can definitely point you in the direction of where the other tourists are. Just follow that herd over there! Otherwise, there are a couple of approaches that they like to take; they either ask a neverending series of questions about your likes and dislikes, your ideal holiday, the size of your bank account.. you get the idea. Yes, that could be seen as a valid approach but by the time the interrogration is over, you probably would have forgotten what you had originally asked them.
The other approach that the concierge may take is to throw (not literally) their neverending supply of leaflets at you. These have been given to them by the hundreds of company’s that want to take money off you to show you how to be a tourist there. There are bus tours, walking tours, helicopter tours, ghost tours.. whatever you might think you need. That’s fine but once you’re back home, you may still find that you have no idea what it would be like to live there.
What else could you do? Well, what about researching the area yourself? Now you’re talking! Every country and city has so many different guides, newspapers, and mags that will tell you what’s on. But.. one word of advice, choose wisely as many of them are just the same as those leaflets; filled with ads and commercials for company’s just wanting your hard earned cash.
So let’s revert to something that I know you’re familiar with. Have a look online! There are so many sites that give you first hand information about experiences you could have anywhere all over the world. Many of them are targeted at locals and tourists, plus they’re written by people that have actually done them so you get an honest idea of how much fun that experience is. You can also have a look at the official websites for that country or city. They are usually created by the tourist board but can give you some insight of the main attractions.
You can also come here.. Solfire Travel. This blog has been created to share travel experiences with you from all over the World, plus you can let me know if you would like to contribute as I’m always keen to add some new amazing travel tips and experiences to the site.
So, make sure you research any new places that you are going to. I recommend doing it online before you’ve left home but if you’re there already, you can go to a travel website quickly to find some amazing ideas for what you should do next. Good luck and happy travelling!
