Rent a Car on Vacation

There’s something about having a car that gives you that terrific sense of freedom and no matter where you are you know that you can just hop back into it and drive off into the sunset!

The problem is that there are now so many car rental places to choose from and some of them charge you through the nose and others you don’t know what kind of scrapheap you might end up with. The people behind the counter are like robots and definitely do not have your best interests in mind, so a lot of the time you may end up paying loads of money for nothing but frustration.

Here are some quick tips to help you get the car that you want at the price that you’d like:

* Look for packages that combine a car with your flights or hotel. Usually they’re called either fly, drive and stay or fly and drive. This can get you brilliant discounts on the car part of the package since they have more margin in the combination of services that they’re providing you.
* You’re on the Internet now, so use it to hire your car. You can get better discounts on the web than if you speak with a real person. A lot of companies, not just car hire places, like you to use the web as it is automated and costs them less for you to transact with them over the Internet.
* Have a look at the memberships you already have; your credit cards, vehicle rescue service or frequent flyer program may offer discounts with certain car rental company’s.
* Before you sign on the dotted line, when you pick up your car, make sure you inspect the car in case there is any damage. Usually, the renter will give you a sheet of paper with a picture of the car that you can draw on to indicate where the damage is. Make sure you do it or you’ll be paying for damage that you didn’t even cause!
* The rental place you get the car will always try to sell you more insurance so that you get a reduced excess. The excess is the amount you have to pay if you make a claim. It’s a con and plays on your fear of doing damage to the car. A smart thing to do is get that excess covered with your travel insurance. Some credit cards also give you that cover if you pay for the rental with the card.

I hope that these tips help. Good luck and happy travelling!
